SARS-CoV-2 variants are a consequence of an error-prone viral polymerase. Viruses exist & propagate as swarms of variants. But specific variants that evade the vaccine will emerge from the vaccinated population due to natural selection (ref- see C. Darwin, "Origin of the Species"

This will cause variants to evolve that circumvent the vaccine & causes more disease and death in the elderly. Universal vaccination into the teeth of an epidemic during high viral pressure is a very bad idea.
