#Mexico just sent shockwaves through the chemical and industrial agriculture industries by announcing its bold plan to be 100% #glyphosate-free by 2024.

The country’s Environment Ministry declared that the Government will break #Monsanto’s toxic grip by gradually reducing the amount of glyphosate farmers may use, and to completely phase out the chemical by 2024.

“Human and environmental health trump productivity,” Director of the Renewable Natural Resources Department Adelita San Vicente Tello said in a statement.

Glyphosate is the main ingredient in Monsanto’s Roundup herbicide, and the world’s most abundant pesticide.

The World Health Organization and the state of California recognize the weedkiller as a probable carcinogen.

In June, July, and August, 2018, I served on the trial team representing a California school groundskeeper, Dewayne “Lee” Johnson in the first Roundup cancer lawsuit to proceed to trial.

Monsanto and its parent company, Bayer, are currently the target of thousands of lawsuits claiming Roundup causes non-Hodgkins lymphoma.

Farmers and landscapers who administer the weedkiller to their crops and lawns are most exposed, but, unless we eat all organic, all of us consume glyphosate residues in our grains, fruits and vegetables, wines, beers, meats, and dairy.

In August of 2014, doctors diagnosed Lee with non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

On Aug 10 the Jury unanimously ordered Monsanto (now Bayer) to pay $289.25 million in damages, finding exposure to Roundup caused Mr. Johnson to develop non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

On Aug 10, we tried two other cases that year returning verdicts of $80 million and $2 billion respectively.
